The Carlson Fable Collection

DoreGAIUseThis.jpg

Welcome to the Website for the Carlson Fable Collection!

One of Fr. Greg Carlson's passions is fables. Fables often use animals to move us from awareness to attitude. A fable invites the listener to become more aware of himself/herself.  Fr. Carlson has been collecting fables for 40 years.

Now the Carlson Fable Collection includes over 10,000 books and perhaps as many fable related objects, titled "Aesop's Artifacts" here. This may be the largest -- perhaps the only -- online collection of fable related objects. There are segments of stories to read and thousands of images to see! Enjoy your stay and come back soon!

The opinions expressed on this web site are the personal views of Gregory I. Carlson, S.J., and are not those of the Society of Jesus.

The Book Bandit: Rare Books, Libraries, and Theft

shelves1.jpg

Created in spring 2023 by the students in Honors 390B, this exhibit explores the life, activities, and trial of Stephen C. Blumberg, known as "The Book Bandit," and considered the most successful book thief in the history of the United States. A part of the more than 23,000 books Blumberg stole reside here at Creighton University, thanks to Creighton librarians volunteering many hours to help the FBI field office in Omaha identify and return stolen books.

Using Blumberg's life story as an entry point, this exhibit also highlights the history of books and libraries as well as questions about access to them. It describes features that help determine a book's rarity and value, offers an overview of book theft, and highlights some legal and scientific questions about book theft and obsessive book collecting.
