- Abstract
- en_US This 25-page large-format booklet presents four fables, as the front cover indicates: "Die Eselsbeichte" by Gerhard von Mindin; "Das Tischgebet" by Martinus Montanus; "Vom Undank der Welt" by Abraham a Santa Clara; and "Fische zu den Semmeln" by Ludwig Bechstein. The pages are folded over rather than cut. As one might expect from a degree-project, the work is carefully done. The four fables are well chosen and well rendered. The stories include well-known fable elements. The confession story is like La Fontaine's "Animals in the Plague." "Tischgebet" picks up elements from the Chanticleer story. "Von Undank der Welt" has elements of "The Brahmin, the Jackal, and the Tiger," as here a farmer convinces a snake to interview a horse, a dog, and fox. He gets free through the fox's cleverness and invites the fox to a meal the next day. But the next day the farmer's wife greets the fox with a death-dealing club. The "Undank der Welt" finds yet another expression! The final fable has to do with two tricks, "fake roadkill" and "fishing with one's tail." My prize among the illustrations goes to the final illustration featuring all three main characters of "Fische" on 25.
