- Abstract
- en_US Here is perhaps the largest of the 17 books I have published by Gordinne. It has many of the features typical of Gordinne, like monochrome pages done in a variety of ink colors and styles interspersed with full-colored pages, many of the latter in the second half of the book signed by "LeRoy." There is regularly a picture frame around the text of a fable. The canvas spines of these 80 year old books are typically deteriorating. Texts are generally on the left and illustrations on the right-hand page. There are rare substitutions of a text on a right-hand page, as on many of the "1" pages beginning various sections. The composition of this book seems particularly haphazard. I count nine sections with pages numbered and several unpaginated sections. The opening section runs through 50 numbered pages. Six unpaginated pages follow, after which come 129-130. All the other sections from there begin over again with a page 1. Identifying this publication becomes more difficult because its first interior title is "Fables Choisies de La Fontaine et Florian." Its cover's title is "Fables Choisies pour les Petits," a title I do not find in our collection for any other Gordinne publication. A frequent artist for the monochrome illustrations is Maurice Lemainque. His signature is reversed on "49" and a late "13" for "Les Deux Bacheliers." I doubt that that is the only repeated story and image in this publication! One late full-colored picture is signed "LeRallie." There is a wide variety of styles in both the monochrome and full-colored sets of illustrations. Last pages of sections frequently have at their bottom "Imprimé en Belgique et Édité par Gordinne a Liége (Belgique)" and "Dessins d'Artistes Français." The last page adds the date 1937.
