Abstract

en_US I never thought I would be speaking of a $750 publication as fun, but this collection of 13 woodcuts is fun! Each woodcut page, 13¼” x 10¼”, has a wrap-around tissue with a short statement that, overlaid on the image, “declares” or perhaps “reveals” the fable shown in the woodcut. This booklet is so 1928! It presents the high society of the roaring 20’s. While the idiomatic French in sometimes a step beyond me, there are several moments that I find not only comprehensible but witty in the best tradition of fables. Thus, in II, grandmother says “My grandchild, people can see your thighs!” She answers “Grandma, people can see your skull.” In IV, a waitress says to an older patron “People would believe themselves strong before the war.” He answers “Ah, how quickly people forget.” The gentleman in a tux, beside a distracted young woman looking away through opera binoculars, declares “I have been celibate, married, cuckolded…. I would love to be widowed…” (VIII). In perhaps the most outrageous illustration, a salesperson says to an obese woman in tight foundation garments as her mid-section hangs out “Now that you have a form, we can dress you” (XI). An American female customer declares “I like the robe. I will also buy the shop” (XIII), Not in Bodemann. #15 of 63: fifty are numbered, twelve have Roman numerals, and one is out of series.
