- Abstract
- en_US This is an oversized (about 10" x 13") set of loose pages offering 110 of Florian's fables without division into books or numbering. It is signed by Chopard and Gonin and is #80 of 115 copies. The fables are adorned with twelve full-page lithographs, which Metzner in Bodemann rightly describes as striking. There are also nineteen endpiece sketches, some having only line outlines. Most impressive among the full-page lithographs are "L'Elephant Blanc" (13); "Le Hibou et le Pigeon" (73); "Le Rhinoceros et le Dromadaire" (97); and "Le Renard Qui Preche" (107). The white elephant is honored in India gathering in himself the souls of heroic humans. The elephant asks to be let go back into the wilderness. "Yes, we are noble. How then could we be made up of the souls of people?" In "The Owl and the Pigeon," when the owl complains that nobody takes care of him, the pigeon answers that the owl takes care of nobody. "The Rhino and Camel" has the rhinoceros complaining that men despise him but favor the camel. The camel answers "It's easy. We have learned to bend the knee." "The Fox As Preacher" has a smart old fox preach first about positive virtues, but no one listens except for a few squirrels silly enough to get within his reach. He converts then to fiery sermons condemning the rich and powerful. Lots of people come. He becomes famous enough to be invited to the King Lion's court, where he preaches up a storm. The lion thanks him and asks what he might want for pay. "Some turkeys, please!" One good example of the endpieces is "The Peacock, Two Goslings, and the Diver" (89). The diver sets straight the two goslings who are criticizing the peacock. In the features they criticize, they are themselves no better than the peacock, and they surely do not have plumage like his! AI at end. The box is in poor condition. I was set to pay a much higher price. ABE shows several copies offered for over $1000. Bodemann #437.
