Abstract

en_US I bought this pair of volumes because we had separate volumes, the first of which did not exactly meet Bodemann's description for #238 or Bassy #33. The page size of this first of two volumes was too large for 13cm x 8 cm, and the description called for 36 titled full-page illustrations. The second meets her description but has been poorly reconstructed, with its spine upside down. I presumed the present pair volumes would fill that gap, and that this second volume would more or less reproduce the interior of the second volume I had found earlier. To my surprise, this volume contains only four illustrations, not the 17 there! They are a frontispiece to Volume III ("The Vultures and the Pigeons"); TT (III, 129); the frontispiece to Volume IV ("Cat and Mice"); and "Four Friends" (IV, 79). Maybe I will someday run into a set that corresponds perfectly to Bodemann's description! Her description still fits the illustrations: "Feine, nahezu wissenschaftlich exakte Tierzeichnungen, doch mit eher menschlichen Physiognomien; oft ungwöhnliche Konfiguration der kulissenbildenden Tier- und Pflanzenwelt. Verquickung mit tropischen Arten. Kontrastreiche Schattierungen ähnlich wie in den Stichen von Simon und Coiny."
