- Abstract
- en_US The title-page describes this book as the revision of "Elson Primary School Reader, Book Three," of which we have a copy listed under 1912/13. The book has been thoroughly reorganized. Now "Fables and Folk Tales" is the very first section, followed by "Brownies and Fairies." That first section includes eleven stories, several labelled as coming from Aesop. "The Hare and the Hedgehog" (7) has joined this section. "Old Horses Know Best" (13) features a young horse drawing a cart of jars, dishes, and bowls; he decides to show the old horse how to get down a hill in a hurry. And he succeeds! "The Miser" is a standard telling of the well known fable. "The Dog and the Horse" comes from Krilov (8:16); the dog claims that the farm does not really need the horse. "The Clown and the Countryman" has become "The Clown and the Farmer." The newly fashioned illustration featuring several colors contrasts nicely with the earlier monochrome illustration. Further stories in the section come from Grimm, Japan, Russia, and the American South.
