- Abstract
- en_US This is an unusual piece of literature. It is a report on a school year in a highly regarded German gymnasium in Breslau, now Wroclaw in Poland. As such it contains all sorts of standard information: who taught which classes, for example, and what are the names of the graduates. The first 26 pages are given to something totally different: a scholarly account of the fables in a Vienna manuscript. I suppose that this "school report" was thus something like our present classical periodicals, with careful research on various subjects. In this case, it is but one serious piece combined with the minutiae of this year at St. Elisabet. The article looks at various editions of fables. A table lists the 130 fables in this "Vindobonensis" manuscript and compares them with principal collections like the Augustana, Accursiana, and Neveleti. Specific fables are then compared with their counterparts in the best-known collections. Finally 40 "political" Greek scazons are presented from the Vindobonensis. This is a surprising find, not represented anywhere else on the internet.
