- Abstract
- en_US This large-format (9' x 11½") paperback presents a lovely variety of illustrators of La Fontaine's fables in vivid color. There is no introduction or commentary. There is a last page of short biographical comments on the sixteen artists. Otherwise there are only pictures and texts. Three are new to me: Thomas Tessier, Emmanuel Fornage, and Hermann Vogel. I have already ordered the works of two of them because of this book! Others represented include: Boutet de Monvel; Pieter Breughel; François Chauveau; Guastave Doré; Jean-Honoré Fragonard; André Hellé; Félix Lorioux; Franz Marc; Gustave Moreau; Jean-Baptiste Oudry; Benjamin Rabier; Auguste Vimar; and the 1894 Artistes de Tokyo gathered by Barboutau. What a lovely book! By the way, the editors may be cheating a little to use Breughel's "The Harvest" to illustrate "The Laborer and His Sons." Was Oudry originally meant to be shown in color?
