- Abstract
- en_US This hardbound edition is identical with another in the collection, whose depiction as "hardbound" is less warranted. This copy is in better condition. I found it in unusual fashion. One of the student assistants at the Prague conference of the Renard Society adopted me in my search for good antiquarian bookshops. In this case, we made a quick trip over lunch and found this out-of-the-way shop, where the owner was not aware of having any fable books. I hunted and found this one, and then we bargained a bit. As I wrote of the other copy, finding another Renouard Florian published in 1812 has helped me to go back and see that this copy actually represents Bodemann #217.1, with its frontispiece of five cameo illustrations and its six illustrations among the fables. The cameo at the lower left of the frontispiece group is "Truth and Fable." The full-page lithographs for the fables are unusually precise and detailed. They include "The Blind and the Lame" (60); "The Child, the Mother, and the Opossums" (65); "The Dervish, the Crow, and the Falcon" (115); "The Owl, the Cat, the Goose, and the Rat" (124, sometimes known apparently as "The Collegians"); "The Trial of the Two Foxes" (171); and "The Guilty Dog" (194). There is an AI at the rear.
