Abstract

en_US Here is a beautifully produced book, with a fox peering out of a hole on the inside front-cover while his tail protrudes from a hole on the inside back-cover. The front-cover gives a good sense of the fables and other stories to come, as animals surround the central print data. 116 pages. 36 fables. I recognize many traditional Aesopic fables, like the "Found Hatchet" (11); "The Fox and the Goat" (18); "Two Goats" (45); and "The Ass's Shadow" (48). There are more, and they are graced with lively illustrations, usually beginning with a suggestive small symbol. WC is adapted here to include a lion (67). FC seems to feature a sausage rather than cheese (71). I think I recognize "The Boy and the Filberts" (102. This book has been carefully prepared and produced! The stories seem to range beyond Aesopic fables to include Jewish and Arabic stories, some perhaps taken from Maimonides' biography, "The Rambam."
