- Abstract
- en_US This is a strong presentation of the story in a sturdy hardbound book of large size (8½" x 11½"). Perhaps the strongest illustration shows the emperor, facing us, seeing for the first time the clothes that are not there on the loom. Two factors disturb me in the telling of the story in this version. The first is that the clothes are invisible to either the stupid or those not fit for their calling. Later in the story, the two will be put together as both occasioning the crisis of not seeing the cloth. The second, more serious difficulty, is that the emperor wants to have a suit of these clothes so that he can tell who does not have these qualities. There is a logical leap there! Wearing them does not necessarily allow one to see others' stupidity! The art work is charming. The emperor here parades in his "Unterhosen" both in picture and text. The emperor, when discovered, decides that it is best "tapfer durchzuhalten," and he parades on despite the cry of the whole population that he is not wearing clothes. Tharlet's work is as delightful in the three versions we have of her GA.
