- Abstract
- en_US This is my kind of fable book! Each fable gets a text of La Fontaine; a large, engaging, and often surprising illustration; and a post-it note. These notes are the special gift of this book. They go in several directions to present afterthoughts on the fable. Many ask if the two contenders could not find a way to be friends. Work together. Enjoy both sides. The first four of the fifty fables presented here are excellent examples. Can the ant not enjoy driving a motorcycle with the cicada in the sidecar? Can the fox and crow not divide the cheese? Could the ox help the frog for some moments to blow himself up and feel good about himself without having to die? Are businessmen in their white shirts not like the watchdog letting themselves be chained? Can they not also, maybe just for a short time, be wolves too? The cartoon art, a full-page for each fable, is perfectly suited to this approach; it often portrays the alternative presented by the post-it note. FG is a good example (52). The post-it note complains of those girls who reject us and our love, and the illustration has a fox using hot-air balloons to get up to the level of the grapes. What fun! 9¼" square. 132 pages. Becquet describes himself as "peintre bédériste, sociétaire des Artistes Français," which I cannot yet understand. The book contains other work from his gallery. Is he the publisher of the book?
