- Abstract
- en_US I find this paperback to be a "sleeper," that is, a surprise because of the imaginative character of its illustrations. It presents Aesop in, as the seller describes, "simplified Chinese characters with Pinyin to help young learners read." The book describes itself as a "Picture Phonetic Version." Each of the 147 fables receives a significant and lively colored illustration, often repeated in a partial element. I started to write this comment by intending to mention a few, but I soon found myself listing many. Here are some of the best near the beginning of this pleasing book. TH on 16-17 has the turtle puffing as he passes the sleeping hare. BW (19) has the boy weeping as the wolf marches off with distended belly. TB (25) does outrageously funny things with proportion of its figures; the same happens in "The Donkey and the Lapdog" (29). One after another, these illustrations amaze me for their creativity and sense of fun! One last treat: MSA on 96 evokes all those bystanders the miller and his son were trying to please! The pictorial cover repeats LM (15). About 6" x 7¾". 148 pages.
