- Abstract
- en_US What a wonderful surprise to find Gorey's spectacular book in German. That 1971 book was "Lions and Lobsters and Foxes and Frogs," published by Young Scott using texts of Ennis Rees first used in 1964 or 1966. I have not checked closely: it would be revealing to see how closely Schmölders follows Rees. For me, the value of this book lies first in perpetuating Gorey's marvelous work, funny in fable after fable. The exhausted ass with his overload of soaked sponges has wonderful facial expressions in the last three illustrations of that fable (9). Similarly, the final illustration for "Der ungeduldige Fuchs" shows only a nose peeking out of the hollowed tree (19): touché! I love the ox that does not fit on the page on which he is about to step upon the frog (29)! 48 pages. 6" x 7½".
