- Abstract
- en_US "Aus Anlass des Jubiläums 150 Jahre Zürcher Tierschutz." This pretty book has fifteen fables created for the occasion of this anniversary. I sampled the first few and enjoyed them. "The Chameleon and the Parrot," the first, is classic fable material. The proud chameleon lists its great features, especially the ability to change color to adapt to any venue. The chameleon criticizes the parrot for being so conspicuous -- and for its endless imitative chatter. The parrot answers sharply "Then you certainly have no friends. You are without personality." And with that the parrot flies away. The chameleon, suddenly unsure of itself, tries out its color changes, including those contrasting with its surroundings. This practice proves tiring and the chameleon falls asleep in the wrong color in the wrong place. A nearby snake discovers and eats the chameleon. Stay true to who you are! The second fable, again in classic style, has a peacock unsuccessful in impressing turkeys walking away to impress others. "Dummheit und Stolz wachsen auf einem Holz!" In the title story, hungry wolf and fox decide for once to bury the hatchet and hunt together. Before they catch any prey, the clever fox brings up the question of how they will divide their spoil. The wolf rejects an even division and even three-quarters. The fox then suggests that he take only one tenth – but right in front of his hole, and with the wolf at some distance, so as not to frighten his children. The greedy wolf does not reflect but quickly agrees. The clever fox takes all the best parts as his portion and slinks into his hole. Greedy animals and people often fail to reflect. The illustrations, often several to a fable, are highly colorful.
