- Abstract
- en_US Here is a substantial book that is beautifully put together. 9" x 11⅜". 192 pages. This book aims to do several things. One of them, I believe, is to be intentionally grand. Jeane Moreau, Oudry's illustrations, commentaries on individual fables, and Suret-Canale's lively art make for a strong combined statement. I looked for other Epigraf Collection Plume d'Or volumes but could not find any. I have known Suret-Canale's work in two places: a 1990 book and, perhaps derivative from that, 1995 calendar cards. The art work here is similar but not identical in cases where the subject overlaps. Instead we have here 32 quite original pieces. Typical of her work here is OF (41). The lion battling the mosquito (67) is similar to Suret-Canale's presentation in those earlier works, but it is still different. Her lion image with the wild mane dominates the cover here. Do not miss DW (45); "The Hare and the Frogs" (77); "The Monkey and the Dolphin" (95, 86, 97); or "The Hen, Cat, and Young Mouse" (111). Suret-Canale often offers a second, black-wnd-white image to comment on the fable. A group of commentators regularly offer literary comments on the fable. All in all, an impressive effort! I am surprised to find it at this price!
