- Abstract
- en_US This copy, in poor condition, seems to be a re-issue by Harper of their American first edition of 1861, of which we have copies from Emerald City, Eugene, OR in Sept., '98 and Jeffrey Marks in June, '10. The spine in this copy is all but non-existent. Hobbs gives 1860 as the date of the first edition of this work, by Routledge. She rightly calls these wood engravings sensitive. I think they are among Weir's best work. It also seems to be his earliest published fable work. The book's format is small (5¼" x 6"), the illustrations occupy a full page each, and the print is large and bold. The book seems well conceived for younger readers. Among the best illustrations are CJ (frontispiece and 19), "The Fox and the Goat" (2), DS (11), "The Eagle and the Fox" (57), BW (79), TB (91), WSC (99), "The Dog, the Cock, and the Fox" (179), and "The Kid and the Wolf" (209). There is a list of illustrations at the front and an AI at the back. A quick search does not reveal the source of the texts.
