- Abstract
- en_US A few minutes ago, I catalogued a book found in Hungary and published in 1987 with Sarkady Janos' translations from Hausrath's Aesop. I noticed mention of a 1969 copyright of Janos' translations. Now I open this book and find that it is the book I referred to there! There is double good news here. This edition is sturdier and it also includes illustrations, like the crow holding the cheese opposite the title-page. The illustrations are wonderfully playful. They usually mix two or three colors in a line-drawing. Among the best I would include the stag seeing himself in the pool (40); GGE (46); the lion in love (70); the wolf, the mother and her baby (80); and the monkey-mother (113). I could mention many more among these delightful illustrations. As in that edition, there are here 307 numbered fables. This copy seems to be stamped as Number 419, but I cannot decipher if there is indication of how limited the edition is. What a happy find!
