Abstract

en_US I thought that I recognized this book. A little tracking revealed that Hieda had done "Aesop's Fables" for Rand McNally in 1972. How nice to have found another "Uitklapboeken"! This version seems to eliminate mention of Aesop both in the title and in individual fables; in the English version the moral was introduced by "Aesop says." I wrote of the English edition that it was my first "flip out book," in which a two-page spread includes a page that folds out to make a triptych. The pages are well matched to create two different pictures using the image on the left, one with the right-hand page folded in and one with this page folded out. For example, the lion opens his eye to see the mouse and then catches him; again, the lion is in the net and then out of it. The page-matches are well executed. LM and TH each gets two sets of fold-outs. This is the first lion I know of who cries "Help!" and he uses English to do it! OF, FS, DS, and SW have one pair of fold-outs each. Simple art. The cover-illustration--the donkey carrying a bag marked "salt"--is not involved in the book's six stories! And the Dutch word for salt is "zout."
