- Abstract
- en_US This early reader includes "The Monkey and the Crocodile" (131-142) by Ellen C. Babbitt. This is a double story. The first segment is the usual story of the crocodile wanting a monkey heart, this time for this young crocodile's mother. They return so that the monkey can get his heart. Outwitted, the crocodile tries another trick in the second section: lying on the rock in mid-river between the monkey's new home and his favorite tree on a nearby island. The monkey figures out that the crocodile is there, engages him, and gets him to open his mouth. When a crocodile opens his mouth, he necessarily shuts his eyes. The monkey avoids the open mouth and again escapes.
