Abstract

en_US Here is a second copy of this short book, found strangely enough in Berlin. It is in much better condition than our first copy and shows differences. I presume that it was printed much later, even though there seems to be no reference to its publication date. In fact, the earlier book's title-page "1903" has been removed. A frontispiece lacking in the older copy has either remained or been added; it pictures two children with toys and a book. The title-page adds New York and Chicago to Boston as the place of D.C. Heath & Company. The verso of the title-page adds "x1/IA6." It also removes reference to typography and presswork. As I wrote there, just past the halfway mark in this first reader, fables appear frequently, ten in all. The boy pulled his "Wolf" joke many times (62). The mice have no assembly against the cat; one just calls out his advice (67). Most surprising of all, the mouse runs right into the lion's mouth and apparently pleads from there (68)! The fables are pleasantly brief. T of C at the front, AI at the back.
