- Abstract
- en_US This is a gigantic 16-page 2-staple pamphlet, 9½" x 12⅛". Its approach to FC, TH, and MM is unusual in several ways. First, it does not follow La Fontaine's verse stoppages but presents his fable without changing any of the texts, which are presented in cartoon "bubbles." Secondly, we encounter here several various-sized panels per page like those in comic books, only much larger. The artist, I believe, does particularly well with the facial expressions of the crow, who ends up wearing an "Ass" crown! He likewise succeeds well in expressing the tortoise's early anger, mid-race effort, and post-race touch of arrogant impertinence. Perrette is beautifully rendered with her striped skirt, striped stockings, wooden shoes, and apron. The artist expresses well how she, like the cow she imagines, skips. The very last panel also presents a convincingly angry husband. Overall charming work!
