- Abstract
- en_US "A Parochial Magazine for All Readers." Vol. IX. Published for the Proprietor. Octavo. This book with marbled boards and endpapers includes a tale in five parts: "The Dog and the Fox; Or Honesty Is the Best Policy," adapted from Lord Lytton. Installments begin on 53, 79, 107, 136, and 165. The dog and the fox are rivals for the hand of a beautiful young cat in marriage. The dog is straightforward and virtuous, while the fox is the epitome of trickery. The five episodes involve two griffins, a magpie, and an owl before the dog gets the cat, the fox runs off in disgrace, and the griffin converts to being a good spirit. The second episode includes a full-page black-and-white illustration of the griffin smoking his pipe in his cave (81), and the fifth a smaller illustration of the owl sending out a tribe of bats with invitations (166). The story is thoroughly pious: honesty is rewarded in the end!
