Abstract

en_US This book is a copy of a book already in the collection, but with significant differences. First, the back cover on this copy published earlier than that other copy, we find a price "DDR 5,80 M." Inside we find on the last page "1. Auflage 1980," not "2. Auflage 1986. This page also prints a price, but then someone has penciled it out. As I wrote of the other copy, here are eighty-one fables of Krylov on 126 pages, as the T of C contained on the last pages makes clear. That is a significant grouping of translated fables. The cover illustration of the monkey with spectacles is excellent. The black-and-white illustrations, even of the same picture, are less engaging. I tried a dozen of the fables and enjoyed them thoroughly. The German is easily intelligible, I believe. Though the paper is cheap and the illustrations could be better presented, a book like this shows what East German publishing was able to achieve.
