- Abstract
- en_US Here is the first volume of an inexpensive but lovely four-volume set, perhaps first done with other curators in 1958; at any rate there is a copyright of that date included. This is a serious effort. I am particularly impressed with Jadoux-Renaud's well chosen and well designed small woodcuts. There is one for almost every fable here in La Fontaine's first six books. By the way, there is a surprising "Tome Deuxieme" break between the third and fourth books here. Does that suggest an original set of four volumes of fables, perhaps along with four volumes of ""Contes et Nouvelles"? Among the best of those woodcuts are WL (137); FS (149); FK (193); FM (231); and DS (300). There are also occasional tailpieces, apparently less connected with the subject of the fable. The beginning of each of La Fontaine's books is marked with Chauveau's original illustration for the first fable in the book.
