- Abstract
- en_US Here it happens again that I come upon a material I did not realize was already in some form in the collection. See my comment on the 1980 "Quatre Fables d'Esope." I will keep here what I have written on this encounter with the German form of the work year later. This is one of the strangest materials in the collection. My description should be taken as tentative. It is a portfolio of loose items forming an exhibit catalogue of a galerie in Zurich featuring the work of Valerio Adami, an Italian painter born in 1935 who painted in London and Paris and whose work was marked by influence from pop media. Italo Calvino lived from 1923 to 1985. The portfolio contains illustrations and texts. The illustrations -- six in color, including the cover illustration "Vereinigungen - Verwirrungen" -- and seven black-and-white are joined by an "Anhang" with a black-nd-white bust of Aesop and three photographs. Where is "Aesop" in this gathering? As far as I can tell, Aesop appears in three places besides the title. There is a black-and-white presentation of "Aesop - Epigramm." There is the Italian essay of Calvino on its own four-page folio "Quattro favole d'Esopo per Valerio Adami." And there is that bust of Aesop at the beginning of the appendix. It turns out that "Quattro favole" is just that, a series of stories, one to a page, describing the interactions of "The hand the line"; "The feet and the figure"; "The horizontal line and the color blue"; and ""The written word, the colors, and the voice." "Aesop - Epigramm" contains the hands peeling an apple and holding a cigarette mentioned in the first fable. Aesop gets around!
