- Abstract
- en_US This large format book of 175 pages has three prinicipal parts. The first positions La Fontaine in Champagne. The second presents fifty fables with a variety of illustrators and comments on each fable as presented. The third presents a portrait of La Fontaine. For me, the second portion, by Gérard Gréverand, is of the greatest interest. Gréverand presents some 36 artists and presents a short sketch of each (164-66) and includes them into the index of places and people (171-72). I took the opportunity to check whether each is in the collection. For whom should we be looking next? This search led to interesting discoveries, for example, of artists who did only occasional paintings or engravings of fables (Delacroix, Coignet, Geoffroy, Lhermitte, Perdoux, Jeaurat); others who are already in the collection, though I was not aware of it (Lebedeff); and others whose work I would love to know better and to include someday (Desenne, Tourcaty, Harpignies). His stimulus will keep me going! The presentation here is not that far from what we did in our Joslyn exhibit. Beautiful color portrayals of great artists' work!
