Abstract

en_US Deux Coqs d’Or continues to make good use of Benvenuti’s highly detailed colored artistry. We have two taller books using the same illustrations. Those books are 8" x 11", while this is 8½" x 10”. Those were published in 1971 and 1982, respectively, with a printing date of 1985 for the second. What is different here? First, the introductory essay by Raymond Dumay has been dropped. The organization among the fables is also different. Those two earlier editions grouped fables by specific animals featured in the fables. I see no such organization here. Further, there is no longer any indication of a series to which this book belongs. Hachette has joined “Deux Coqs d’Or” in the meantime. Finally, and perhaps most strikingly, the editors have dealt creatively with Benvenuti’s illustrations, sometimes using just a portion or dividing the former illustration into two separate sections. Two feathers are removed from the cat illustration (29 in 1988) for “The Cat and the Two Sparrows.” They are placed strategically next to the title of the fable here (16). From the two illustrations for “The Cat and the Old Rat” (on 24 and 25) in the 1988 printing, we find one illustration of the cat repeated (22) but only a portion of the encounter on 25 is excerpted and presented near the beginning of the fable on 21: only the rats appear in this newly separated segment. Cleverly done! There is a T of C at the book’s beginning. I wrote back then that there are numerous realistic, playful, better-than-average drawings of animals in courtly human garb. I would add now that much of the colored artwork is wonderfully exact and precise in its detail.
