Abstract

en_US As I wrote about the parallel Florian volume published two years earlier, I am so glad to see a publisher take up Barboutau's classic work published in the mid 1890's and reproduce it well, as again this large and impressive volume does. The detailed work of the skilled Japanese artists is able to stand up to the expansion of the illustrations. The details still look good. This book also solves a problem in the Japanese first editions, namely that the illustrations were spread across two pages, and some of the artistry in the very center of the two pages was not visible. Here a sturdy spine enables a viewer to see the full image. Among my favorites from this viewing are: FC (20-21); OF (28-29); FS (36-37); OR (48-49); and "The Bird Wounded by an Arrow" (56-57). I will stop listing them here because I am, with good reason, listing almost all of them! The front dust-jacket presents a lovely detail from "The Sun and the Frogs" (100-101). In fact, the editors have altered the image to bring more of it together. There is a T of C on 127, and the five artists are acknowledged for their specific contributions on 129. The book begins with a four-page essay by Barbey d'Aurevilly from 1889.
