- Abstract
- en_US This book puts together seven fables from Aesop and eight from Samaniego. Most of these prose fables with stated morals are confined to two-pages each. The colored art is big, dramatic, and simple. One of the "Aesopic" fables is about trees choosing a king. Is not that story really from Judges 9: 7-15? The best image among those for Aesop is "The shadow of the donkey," where the shadow really does fall upon parts of both human characters. The Samaniego fables are almost entirely those we would associate with Aesop: FC; FG; GGE; GA; DW; "Los ratones y el gato"; MM; and LM. "Los ratones y el gato" has the cat playing dead but not fooling the chief mouse. Best of the Samaniego illustrations is MM, where the pail is already dripping drops down on eggs, chicks, chicken, pig, lamb, and cow.
