- Abstract
- en_US This is an unusual book in its presentation of 17 fables on 123 pages. Might it be from an Italian original, since its claims Hartley for its storytelling but also has a Portuguese translator? A next unusual thing about this book is that the versions frequently change La Fontaine's endings. The wolf is carried away by the current and so does not eat the lamb (16-21). The dog's anger at the donkey comes because the latter does not jump to knock fruit down from the tree (46). The stag gets away before the dogs kill him (69). The crane leaves off eating frogs because he is full (81). The miller and his son just continue on carrying the donkey when the people in town laugh at them (88). A final unusual feature of this book is the frequent change in typeface, involving three or four distinct styles on one page. I am unsure of the benefit of this pattern. 8¾" x 11".
