- Abstract
- en_US Here is the German version of Showalter and Ungerer's "The Donkey Ride" from 1967. It proved a hard book to get once I found it on the web. Somehow the computer kept asking for exorbitant mailing costs. I finally had it sent by the dealer to Franz and Ursula in Heidelberg. As I wrote of the English version, it is a delightful book. Showalter expands the fable's details considerably. The donkey carries a load of their produce to market to sell, as he does many Saturdays; there is never a suggestion that he is to be sold himself. In fact, Showalter ridicules the farmer especially here, mouthing trite formulae that his son can only say "yes" to. For example, "The market won't come to us." Here the son objects to being asked to ride. The farmer gives a long answer that it is good to prepare for what is coming. He even expresses a ridiculous fear that the son would melt in the hot sun. In the last phase, father and son carry the sacks as well as the donkey! In the end, everything and everyone goes into the river. And still the father lectures the son on what is right. 4¾" x 7½". Colored and monochrome pages alternate. I like the colors! And the lively style of storytelling and story-illustrating!
