Abstract

en_US This very inexpensive pair of volumes joins three very close relatives in the collection. One, dated 1798, bought from Genetparis, seems highly identical with the present Volume I except for the date of 1798, even though, like this volume, that year is translated as "An VII." Also, that is not a hard-cover book, and this copy is. The second publication, from Allen Schneider, dated 1787, has both volumes, as does the present publication. These two volumes are similar to our two, but there are differences. The 1787 pair belong to a series, “Collection des Auteurs Classiques François et Latins.” They are also said to have been “Imprimé par Ordre du Roi pour l'Éducation de Monseigneur le Dauphin.” There is a big difference between 1787 and 1799! A third book, from Zsolt Nemeth, almost exactly matches Volume II of the present set. It is dated in 1799 (“An VII”), and the publisher is the longer “L'Imprimerie et la Fonderie Stéréotypes de Pierre Didot l'Ainé et de Firmin Didot.” Unfortunately, it lacks covers and is paperbound. Its page is also an inch wider than the present book’s. So here is a pair of volumes of La Fontaine in very good condition and well matched with each other.
