Abstract

en_US In 2007 I found a book of Florian published by "Librairie Théodore Lefèvre et Émile Guérin" and offering his fables with the illustrations of two artists. After checking Bodemann, I believed that that was a smaller later version of Bodemann #355.1. Now I believe that this present book is that #355.1. It is published by "Librairie Théodore Lefèvre et Cie," though it has "Emile Guérin, Éditeur" embossed in the cover! It adds a set of "Fables Choisies" (165-92), composed by perhaps eleven other writers. The title-page accordingly adds "Suivies d'un Choix de Fables par Divers Auteurs." As I wrote there, the engravings are frequent and helpful for understanding what is going on in Florian's fables. There is an illustration about every six pages. Metzner in Bodemann (#355.1) describes a contrast between the two artists. "Die beiden Zeichner ohne Angleichung der Bildkonzeption: Lacaille mit aus Untersicht gezeichneten Figuren in voller Bildhöhe; Besnier mit aus Übersicht gezeichneten, meist eine Gruppe im Bildmittelgrund formierenden Figuren, nicht in voller Bildhöhe und mit mehr Kulissen." It seems to me that in this volume the illustrations of Lacaille vastly outnumber those of Besnier. The latter's signature in the bottom right is usually cut down to a few letters. The difference between the two editions is clear in the page numbers in the T of C that closes this volume, while the T of C opened that volume. I have noted a propos of "Les Fables de La Fontaine pour Bébé" from 1896 -- precisely between the dates of these two Florian editions -- the discrepancies in the ways that this publishing firm identifies itself.
