- Abstract
- en_US "Fable originale + Fable revisitée." This paperback of 103 pages offers three elements for each of 21 fables: the original text of La Fontaine; a racy, contemporary full-page colored image; and a contemporary rendering. The concept is lively and engaging, introduced on the front cover by an image of La Fontaine writing on a cell phone in the midst of a contemporary busy city street. I am only sorry that the project did not extend further into this promising effort. For most fables, the story has trendy contemporary idiom but is not really reinvented. Similarly the images are contemporary, but tend to echo traditional fable illustrations. A pleasant exception is the first fable, GA, which has the grasshopper pleading before a chic ant on a snowy city streetcorner. An even better exception is the second fable, OF. A petite little frog sees a "bodybuilt" ox and exclaims "Je veux être aussi swag que lui!" She soon explodes with a "BOUM" "With a burst of bubbles, she lands, a little dazed but awake." The illustrations for FC and WL could have been used in any standard book of La Fontaine's fables. T of C at the end. 5.5" x 9". "Imprimé a la demande."
