Abstract

en_US I may be wrong, but I think we stumbled into a real treasure here. This book, in present-day strong binding, seems exactly identical with a copy in the bavarikon from the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek: https://www.bavarikon.de/object/bav:BSB-HSS-00000BSB00109626?p=80&lang=en. I wondered when I found it whether it is a facsimile. There is no such indication. The online Bavarian version seems to have the same blank pages (verso pages of both text and illustrations). Selections are from Aesop (2); Gleim (7); Pfeffel (10); Gellert (1); Lichtwer (3), each with a full-page illustration. There is thus a total of 23 fables. The two Aesopic fables are less known: "Die Adler und die Eule" and "Der Esel und die Froesche." The selection of fables may tend to the noble and custom-bound. Rather than events, they sometimes offer reflections. Refreshing therefore is Gellert's "Die Henne und die junge Ente." The young duck goes straight to the water and enjoys it, while the mother hen is keeping all her chicks away from this "danger." 8' x 10'. Not in Bodemann.
