Abstract

en_US Our collection already contains 32 versions of books illustrated by Romain Simon. When I saw this book advertised, I checked twice, thinking "We must already have it." We did not. Perhaps it is rather rare. The only copy I could find on the web is the copy we just bought! It presents 44 fables on some 93 pages, with a T of C at the end. Every fable has at least one black-and-white illustration. The size of these illustrations varies. Besides, there are six full-page colored illustrations. They include "La Fontaine Among the Animals" (frontispiece); TB (facing 28); "Lion, Wolf, and Fox" (facing 42); "Ass and Dog" (facing 56); TH (facing 61); and "Wolf as Shepherd" (facing 88). The visual presentation of TB is unusual. One companion holding a gun is running away from the bear. The other, in the black-and-white illustration, is propping himself up on the ground. Not in Bodemann. One title-page contains the note "17e Série." As the dealer notes, "Tan toned boards and spine with gilt lettering on spine and brown picture of fox on front board. Marbled end papers."
