- Abstract
- en_US This is the second volume of a lovely set. I had sought a companion to an earlier finding of Tome 1 and was lucky to find a pair in excellent condition. This book is thus, like its partner, a fine copy of this important and lovely book. I have several other things by Jouaust and so I had presumed that I had this important edition. This large book (7¼ x9¾) is the Edition dite des douze painteurs, as Bodemann (#349) indicates. There is no frontispiece in this volume. There is, however, an engraving before every book, each by a different artist and each protected by a slipsheet. There is also a vignette before the first and after the last fable of each book. Among the best work, in my opinion, are Le Coche et la Mouche by John Lewis Brown (before Book VII); L'Enfouisseur et son Compère by Edouard Detaille (before Book X); and Love and Folly by Emile Lévy (before Book XII). The other full-page illustrations are of Les Deux Amis; Le Singe et le Léopard; and The Danube Peasant. The vignettes at the beginnings of the books are more elaborate and thematic than those at their close. The best of the former is the face * (of Ulysses?) before Book XII's first fable on Ulysses and his companions.
