- Abstract
- Here is a second impression of a book first published by Franklin Watts in 1969. This copy not only adds a dust-jacket. It changes slightly the publication information on the title-page and adds an SBN number. It is also in much better condition than my 1969 copy. As I reread this version now twenty-eight years later, I am struck by the changes Wildsmith makes in La Fontaine's version. Father and son carried the donkey as the first step in the journey ""to save him from dirtying his feet on the way." They carried the donkey in a kind of make-shift pallet. They changed then from that approach because "The miller did not like to be laughed at." In the end, they sold the donkey quickly. The miller's "head ached from thinking about his difficult journey and all the different kinds of advice he had received." From now on, he would make up his own mind and then stick to it. The story's last line is "They went in search of their dinner."
