- Abstract
- en_US This is an unstapled pamphlet of 9 pages, all but 1-2 presenting a musical score. The libretto for this operette, one of ten that make up the Aesop's Fables series, is a combination of L'Estrange's text and Smith's own. This fable, as it is told here, is brief, harsh, and dramatic. A lark has been caught by a bird-catcher. The bird asks if she is to be punished for stealing one grain of wheat. The bird-catcher's answer is that he needs to meet his daily quota of birds caught. End of story! The moral is 'Tis no purpose to stand reasoning where the adversary is both party and judge. So far I have been lucky enough to find four of the ten pamphlets. The original price for each pamphlet was $.75. Inflation has not been too bad! I would love to hear these works performed.
