- Abstract
- en_US We have already in the collection four copies of the first edition of this book. This copy I will list under its own ID number. I believe that it may be the earliest. It has white rather than gold printing on its spine and the simplest marking for Rand McNally at the base of the spine. It has no small number in the lower right of the verso of the title-page. Three of the others have C-20, C-24, and C-24. The other copy without a small number has larger lettering at the bottom of the spine and is in poorer condition. The present is perhaps the cleanest copy I have of these various first editions. As I wrote under the common number for those other four copies, this is a green covered book with 146 fables on 112 pages. All the illustrations are colored. In 1997, I made a closer study of this edition's texts, which the later compilation, The Real Picture Book (1929), admits to having been done by Valdemar Paulsen. They have a steady eye on correct children's behavior. The stories' actions are carefully motivated, sometimes even over-motivated. In fact, the stories have a tendency to overkill. There are good statements from the characters, made to themselves when talk with others would be inappropriate. There are some double morals. I could find no obvious source for the tellings.
