- Abstract
- en_US This large (about 8¼ x 11) pamphlet with stiff wraps reminds me of the Aunt Louisa series done by one of Partridge's competitors. This booklet is inscribed in 1895. It is in good condition. It includes ten fables that take up a part of a page and are illustrated with proportionally sized monochrome illustrations. There are also six full-page chromolithograph illustrations, two of which include the short fable text at their base, and the other four of which have their text between the others on the facing page. The chromolithographs (DS, LM, DM, FG, TH, and The Boys and the Frogs) are nicely done and surprisingly well preserved. The bear pays with many stings for stealing honey that did not belong to him. The moral here of GGE is It is never worth while to give up that which is sure for that which is uncertain. The shepherd boy has cried Wolf! many times. The children in one circle on the cover set up an infinite series by reading this book, and so there must be on the cover of their book two children reading a book on whose cover….
