- Abstract
- This book, almost 8" x 8½", contains three of Andersen's stories: "The Tinder Box"; "The Emperor's New Clothes"; and "Thumbellina." I include it in the collection because of the second story. It is told in traditional fashion. This emperor changes clothes every hour. The cloth supposedly made by the two rogues posing as weavers is invisible to everyone either stupid or unfit for the office he holds. The emperor sends first one and then another and then comes himself to behold the cloth. All go through the same mental process including "It will never do for me to say I can't see it." The parading emperor here wears a crown, a sash, a sword, lower long underwear, and high heels. After the child's statement "But the Emperor has nothing on at all," people whisper to one another and then all the people cry "But he has nothing on." The emperor is angry because the people are right, but he thinks that the procession must go on. As in many traditional versions, the last line of the story is about the attendants who take "greater pains than ever to appear to be holding up his train, through there was no train to hold." This version is wise not to give the emperor's motivation for wanting new clothes of this cloth. Does the emperor learn anything? And do those rogues get away with it? Tora's emperor is suitable, slightly portly, and much taken up with himself, even when naked. OCLC WorldCat gives the date of 1967; there is no date in the book.
