- Abstract
- en_US This delightful Russian folktale makes use of the Aesopic motif of getting the attacker to stop and read a message on the horse's hoof. In this case, the lion is the attacker, and there have been several typical folkloric events beforehand. The ram convinces the lion, for example, that meat like his must be cooked on a spit first. The drawings of the later pages of the book are more successful than the sculptures of the early pages, I believe. There are lots of clever points in this book, like varied typefaces, shifting placement of page-numbers, and dramatic use of symbols leading up to the horse's great revelation. A very nice find!
