- Abstract
- en_US This is an incomplete reprinting, one year later, of Arnault's four books of fables. From Bodemann's description, it seems identical with the original edition of 1812 done in Paris by Jh. Chaumerot-Chaumerot jeune, Gillé fils. A special feature of this book is the folded frontispiece, unfortunately incomplete here. It shows a number of animals in human clothing in a human room. They play games, woo, play an instrument, and watch others. This time I tried Le Chien et le Chat (9). Dog and cat are playing with each other. The dog is good natured and playful. The cat, on the contrary, seems friendly but holds something back. The fable ends with a direct statement to the cat: do not be anything at halves. I prefer a clear enemy to a friend who scratches! This copy is incomplete; it is missing pages 75-76, 81-100, 105-124, and 129-48. Still, it is a lovely old relic of what it once was!
