- Abstract
- en_US This is a slick, large-format paperback book full of James Christensen's art. The art is an engaging combination of fantastic imagination and detailed observation. It may reach its height in paintings like The Burden of the Responsible Man on 57, which also appears on the book's cover. I bought this book because it was advertised with the caption Myths, Fables & Tales. I find much more of the first and third than I do of the second. Perhaps the most pertinent painting for the collector of fables is Once Upon a Time (42). Its caption begins A magical storyteller in the woods tells fables to the characters who are usually in those fables. The art in this book may not be to everyone's taste, but I would hope that anyone could have fun with this book. For me, one of its delightful moments comes with the sign on the side of the riverboat to the afterlife: Manus pedesque in rate tenete.
