Abstract

en_US Copyright 1960. Here is a typical Reclam edition. It includes nineteen fabulists. Those appearing here who appear less frequently elsewhere include Triller, Stoppe, Meyer von Knonau, Kästner, Schlegel, Zachariae, Moser, Nicolay, Claudius, Merck, Pestalozzi, Bürger, and Heinse. There is a T of C at the back. I tried one fable each from five of these lesser known fabulists. First came Triller's Day and Night. The two argue over which is greater. Triller's own conclusion is that God made all things to praise Him and to serve us. I tried Stoppe's The Valley and the Mountains. The two mountains hate the valley and decide to overwhelm it with water in the next rainstorm. Alas, the valley comes out deeper and larger! Those who try to hurt us often help us. From Von Knonau comes the best so far, The Cow and the Fox. Each wishes things for the other for the coming year. Thus the cow wishes the fox things like grass, cabbage, salt, and hay. The fox wishes the cow good things like ducks, chickens, rabbits, and fish. Kästner's The Gardener and the Butterfly has the former--apparently wisely--punish the butterfly for the caterpillar's sins. Schlegel's WL seems to follow traditional patterns closely.
