- Abstract
- en_US A very pleasing collection of stories, including such things as the Odyssey's Argus story and selections from the Book of Proverbs, Pliny, and the ninth-century Book of Beasts. Fables are represented by the Aesopic DW (47), The Fox, the Wolf, and the Mule (61), and LaFontaine's GA and FC (102, 104). There is a strange attribution after DW: AESOP: translation either Croxhall (1722) or James (1848). This attribution not only cannot decide where it comes from; it misspells Croxall's name in the process! In fact, the version is from Croxall with some emendations. This edition features the misspelling fiirst within its text. The moral to The Fox, the Wolf, and the Mule is surprising: Not everyone who can read is wise. The black-and-white block prints are unspectacular. Dillon translates or recreates many of the stories.
