- Abstract
- en_US This book is apparently Kingfisher's version of The Animal Tale Treasury (1986), likewise printed in Italy. (It also has significant overlap with A Treasury of Animal Stories in 1992). The illustrations here alternate between color and black-and-white. The three Aesop fables (out of a total of ten stories) are retold by Robin Lister: TH turns out to be a huge surprise. The girl feels bad for the hare; Aesop comes in a dream and reveals that the hare was asked to instigate and throw the race to improve the tortoise's self-concept! LM is the second fable. FC has different elements: stolen strawberry cheesecake and comments from the raven with it in his mouth before he sings and loses it. Other stories are taken from Edward Lear, Rudyard Kipling, Ruskin Bond, Ted Hughes, and Philippa Pearce. I knew I had seen this book before! My favorite picture is still that of the dejected Aesop on 12.
